Compersion is a term that means an empathetic state of happiness and joy experienced when another individual experiences happiness and joy. The word is mostly used by non-monogamists to describe a feeling of joy when they are aware their partner is experiencing pleasure or happiness with another person.
In short, it is the opposite of jealousy. It’s similar to the happiness you feel when your partner gets a promotion or accomplishes something, but expanded. You’re not thinking about yourself, you’re thinking about them. For most people, compersion doesn’t come as naturally as jealousy, but if it’s something you want to perceive, with a little rational thinking and maturity, it is possible.
Just as some people say the phrase “happy wife, happy life,” other people think the happiness their partner experiences with others can be used to strengthen their own relationship.
