Jism in 1899? The Surprising Timeline of Dirty Words

(click on image to see it full size)

You read it right – in 1899 the word “Jism” was already being used according to the Oxford English Dictionary. Lapham’s Quarterly posted a chart called Body Talk, the image seen above, which expertly graphs when these words were first used. Some special words that jumped out at me:

  • 1675: Bumfiddle
  • 1674: Eggfry
  • 1914: Jelly roll
  • 1927: Pootang

I want to personally thank who ever made this chart! A much needed add to the field of sexology. Not only is this fascinating, it would also make for a great coffee conversation starter.
